Why Nigeria Is Now the Hottest Early-Stage VC Market in Africa

Nigeria’s early-stage startup funding in Africa is shifting, and Nigeria is pulling ahead of the pack.

By early 2026, Egypt and Nigeria represent the centre of gravity in early-stage African venture activity, while Morocco’s ecosystem appears to be gaining institutional traction. That’s a significant pivot from just a year ago when Kenya dominated deal count. Nigeria didn’t just hold ground it grew.

Nigeria is home to over 20,700 startups and four unicorns, with a total of 1,396 investors having participated in 1,358 funding rounds. For a market that still carries the tag of “high-risk,” that level of investor engagement tells a different story. Part of what’s drawing early-stage capital is the sheer size of the problems being solved.

Nigeria has deep payment friction, a large informal economy, many underbanked users, and a huge need for merchant tools, credit systems, remittance rails, and business banking. When pain is that constant and that widespread, startups that reduce friction tend to grow fast and VCs know it.

Ventures Platform, headquartered in Abuja, has built a reputation as one of Nigeria’s most respected early-stage VC firms, backing transformative companies such as Paystack, PiggyVest, Mono, and Gradely. Firms like these are doing more than writing cheques. They’re building the credibility layer that encourages global investors to follow.
