Paystack Launches AI Checkout in Nigeria

Paystack just made it possible to complete a payment without opening an app. The company has launched Paystack Index, an early-access product that lets Zap users in Nigeria transact through AI agents. The tool currently works with Claude, ChatGPT, and OpenClaw. Users can buy airtime and data, make Zap transfers, and order food through Chowdeck.
The Paystack Index AI checkout Nigeria tool connects AI agents with payment providers. For example, a user can ask an AI agent to buy airtime, and Index routes the request and processes the payment through Paystack’s infrastructure. Users stay in control because the system only acts within the permissions they set. It also does not store card details, PINs, or bank credentials.
Meanwhile, Paystack CEO Shola Akinlade said the product responds to changing online behaviour. “As AI agents become a more common way for people to search, decide, and take action, we think checkout has to evolve too,” he said. A Google-Ipsos survey found that 88% of Nigerians used generative AI in the past year, while 62% used it for everyday tasks.
Today, Paystack serves more than 300,000 organisations across five African countries, making Index its first major bet on AI-powered commerce.
