A former Tesla engineer is betting on Europe’s next AI breakthrough. Rémi Cadene, who helped develop the intelligence behind Tesla’s Optimus robot, has unveiled Northstar, an AI-powered European humanoid robot designed to work in factories, warehouses, and eventually homes. The launch signals Europe’s growing ambition to compete with the United States and China in the rapidly expanding robotics market. UMA is already in talks with around 50 potential customers and plans to focus on Europe before expanding elsewhere.
Cadene founded Paris-based startup UMA after leading robotics projects at Tesla and later contributing to Hugging Face’s open-source robotics platform. Northstar is built for manufacturing plants, logistics centres, hospitals, laboratories, and homes. The company also plans to launch pilot programmes across logistics, manufacturing, and healthcare later this year while relying on real-time learning to help robots master new tasks faster.
The timing is significant. Investors are pouring billions into humanoid robotics as labour shortages and advances in artificial intelligence reshape industrial automation. UMA believes its software-first approach and European roots will help it stand out against well-funded rivals such as Tesla, Figure AI, and several Chinese robotics companies.
The rise of the European humanoid robot reflects a broader shift in AI adoption. Companies are no longer looking only for smarter software. They also want intelligent machines that can perform physical tasks safely and efficiently. If startups like UMA deliver on those promises, Europe’s role in the global robotics race could become much more prominent.
