Gemini Notebook is the new name for NotebookLM, as Google folds one of its most popular AI products into its flagship brand. The company confirmed the change this week and framed it as a natural next step, since the research assistant now sits deep inside the wider Google ecosystem. Meanwhile, the tool keeps its standalone identity even under the new name. More than 30 million people and over 600,000 organizations already rely on it, and Google first introduced it as Project Tailwind back at I/O 2023.
Beyond the name change, Google is expanding one of the product’s most powerful features. Last month, every notebook gained a secure cloud computer that writes and runs code against a user’s uploaded sources, and this update unlocked new outputs like spreadsheets and slide decks. However, that expansion stayed limited to Ultra subscribers and select Workspace accounts. Now, Google says it is rolling code execution out to AI Pro users on the web over the coming weeks. Free-tier access remains unconfirmed for now.
Beyond the rebrand itself, Google keeps pushing notebooks into more corners of its product line. Users can already create and open notebooks directly inside the Gemini app, and the two experiences sync fully across devices. Additionally, Google plans to bring notebooks into AI Mode in Search, a move that would place the tool inside an interface serving over a billion monthly users. Still, as The Next Web reports, no firm timeline exists for that integration yet.
The bigger question is whether the new name helps or hurts the product’s identity. NotebookLM built its reputation precisely because it felt distinct from Gemini’s chatbot-style interface. Some users may now see the shift as Google prioritizing brand consistency over the tool’s independent character, even as the underlying product keeps improving.
