Vercel has added Laguna S 2.1 on Vercel AI Gateway, making Poolside’s powerful coding model available to developers worldwide, including those building AI products across Nigeria and Africa.

The model comes in two versions. The free tier offers a 256K context window, while the paid tier extends that to 1M tokens. Both run under the model ID prefix poolside/laguna-s-2.1.

What Makes Laguna S 2.1 Different

Laguna S 2.1 is an open-weight Mixture-of-Experts model. It supports both thinking and no-thinking modes, giving developers flexibility depending on task complexity. More importantly, it focuses on agentic coding, handling tasks like writing and debugging code, running tests, and building browser-based tools.

It also supports MLOps pipelines and AI research workflows. In thinking mode, the model scores 70.2% on Terminal-Bench 2.1, 78.5% on SWE-bench Multilingual, and 59.4% on SWE-Bench Pro. These are strong numbers for a coding-focused model.

How to Access It via Vercel

Developers can call Laguna S 2.1 on Vercel AI Gateway using the AI SDK with just a few lines of code. They simply set the model parameter to poolside/laguna-s-2.1 or the free variant. From there, Vercel handles usage tracking, cost monitoring, retries, and failover automatically.

Vercel AI Gateway also includes custom reporting, Zero Data Retention support, API key budgets, and routing rules. Crucially, Vercel reflects provider pricing with no markup. It also charges no platform fee on inference, even for Bring Your Own Key (BYOK) requests.

Why This Matters for African Developers

For Nigerian developers and startups building on AI infrastructure, access to Laguna S 2.1 on Vercel AI Gateway opens a practical path to enterprise-grade agentic coding tools. The no-markup pricing model is especially attractive for teams operating on lean budgets. Additionally, the free tier lowers the barrier to entry significantly.

As African tech teams increasingly build with AI, tools like Laguna S 2.1 offer a competitive edge in shipping reliable, AI-powered software products. Developers can test the model directly in Vercel’s model playground before integrating it into production.
