Axle, an insurance technology company, has raised $17.5 million in Series A funding as it works to expand its automated platform for the insurance industry. The funding round was led by Base10 Partners, with existing investors Y Combinator and Gradient also taking part. Stage 2 Capital and insurance industry angel investors also joined the round.

Axle is building what it describes as an AI-native insurance clearinghouse. Its technology helps businesses verify insurance coverage and handle other policy-related tasks without relying as heavily on manual processes such as phone calls and document checks.

The company says its platform now clears more than $100 billion in insurance coverage each year and serves more than 4,000 customers. Its customers include companies such as Rocket Mortgage, Avis, Experian and Sonic Automotive.

Axle also says the number of workflows it automates has tripled over the past six months, while the speed of those workflows has increased significantly.

The new funding will help Axle expand its engineering and go-to-market teams and extend its technology across more areas of insurance. The company is focused on making insurance information easier for businesses and software systems to access.

The funding highlights growing investor interest in technology that can reduce manual work in the insurance industry
