Microsoft Copilot Mico retirement lands this Tuesday, and it takes four other features with it. Group Chat, Podcasts, Copilot Labs and consumer Deep Research all shut down the same day. Microsoft confirmed the changes on its own support page, giving users a clear deadline to act.

Mico does not disappear entirely, though. Instead, the character exits the voice experience and joins Learn Live as a tutor. Any custom Mico settings from voice mode will not carry over, so that reset is final. Microsoft framed the move gently, saying Mico taught the company about warmth and how people want to talk with AI.

This cleanup fits inside a much bigger shift, however. Microsoft has started merging its consumer Copilot app with the Microsoft 365 version, and both now share one name. Group Chat threads, messages and images will not transfer, so users should save anything important first. Podcasts remain downloadable individually until the deadline, while Deep Research becomes a paid tool called Researcher for professional accounts.

The strategic reasoning behind this reset is important context here. Jacob Andreou took over Copilot in March 2026 from Mustafa Suleyman, who built the app around personality. Andreou reportedly told staff the app must earn its place through real outcomes, not charm. That framing explains why a color-changing blob no longer fits the roadmap.

Numbers help explain the urgency too. Microsoft 365 Copilot reached 30 million paid seats by July 2026, a solid enterprise result. Consumer Copilot, meanwhile, has around 38.5 million monthly users, according to Sensor Tower estimates reported by The Next Web. ChatGPT, by comparison, sits near a billion monthly users, so the gap remains wide.

Satya Nadella has promised a unified “super app” by the end of the third quarter. That app would combine chat, coding, Cowork and Microsoft’s internal agent workflow. Whether removing Mico actually moves the consumer numbers will be the real test ahead.
