Stripe has reportedly finalized an agreement to acquire OpenRouter, an artificial intelligence platform that gives developers access to multiple AI models, for more than $7 billion, according to Bloomberg. The report was also covered by TechCrunch.
OpenRouter allows users to choose between hundreds of AI models through a single platform. This means developers can select a model based on factors such as the type of task, performance and cost, rather than building separate connections for each AI provider.
The reported acquisition would give Stripe a stronger position in the growing AI infrastructure market. Stripe is best known for its online payments technology, but the company has increasingly expanded its software services for businesses.
OpenRouter’s growth has been rapid. In May, the company announced a $113 million Series B funding round at a reported $1.3 billion valuation. Its investors include Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz, Menlo Ventures and CapitalG. OpenRouter has also said it has about 8 million users globally and provides access to more than 400 AI models.
OpenRouter CEO Alex Atallah previously compared the company to “Stripe for AI†because it provides a single access point to different AI systems.
However, Stripe has not officially confirmed the acquisition. A company spokesperson told TechCrunch that Stripe does not comment on rumors or speculation.
For Stripe, the reported deal could become a major step into the infrastructure powering the rapidly expanding AI economy.
