The Oscars Just Locked In 2027 and 2028 Dates for a Historic Last Run

Quick Reads
  • The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has confirmed the 99th Oscars will be held on Sunday, March 14, 2027, and the landmark 100th ceremony on Sunday, March 5, 2028.
  • Both ceremonies will be broadcast live on ABC from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, airing in more than 200 territories worldwide.
  • The 2027 and 2028 shows will be the final Oscars telecasts on ABC, ending a partnership with the network that stretches back to 1976.
  • From 2029, YouTube will take over global broadcast rights, with the ceremony relocating to the Peacock Theater at L.A. Live in downtown Los Angeles.
  • No host has been announced for either upcoming show, though speculation around a third consecutive Conan O’Brien appearance is already circulating.

The Academy has officially confirmed the next two Oscar ceremonies and the countdown is on to a milestone that will reshape how the world’s most famous film awards look, feel, and where they live.

The 99th Academy Awards will take place on Sunday, March 14, 2027, with the 100th ceremony following on Sunday, March 5, 2028. Both shows will air live at 7 p.m. ET on ABC and stream across more than 200 territories from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. The announcement, made Tuesday by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, also dropped the full awards season calendar for 2026–2027, giving studios, filmmakers, and Oscar campaigns their roadmap for the year ahead.

What makes these two dates feel heavier than a typical scheduling announcement is the era they’re closing out. The 2028 ceremony will be the final Oscars on ABC ending a broadcast relationship that goes back nearly five decades and the last to be held at the Dolby Theatre, which has hosted the ceremony every year since 2002 (outside of the pandemic-moved 2021 show).

It will also be the 100th Academy Awards, a centennial that the industry has been building toward for years. Starting with the 101st ceremony, the show moves to the Peacock Theater at L.A. Live and transitions to YouTube, which secured global streaming rights through at least 2033. That shift alone from a legacy broadcaster to a free streaming platform is one of the more significant structural changes in Oscar history.

The 2027 season calendar is now set in motion. The eligibility window opens January 1, 2026 and closes December 31. Nominations will be announced on January 21, 2027 the same day, notably, that Sundance Film Festival kicks off its first edition in Boulder, Colorado.

Final voting closes March 4, 2027, with the ceremony following ten days later. The Academy has not yet released the 2028 season schedule beyond the ceremony date itself. One storyline Hollywood is already watching: studios had formally pushed the Academy to shorten the gruelling awards season, citing burnout among nominees and spiralling campaign costs. Those requests were set aside for now, with any structural changes pushed to the 2027–2028 cycle at the earliest.
