Netflix’s most reliable action franchise is gearing up for another round. Chris Hemsworth has formally closed a deal to reprise his role as mercenary Tyler Rake in Extraction 3, with Idris Elba and Golshifteh Farahani also confirmed to return. Director Sam Hargrave, who helmed both previous films, is back behind the camera, and production is scheduled to begin this summer.
The confirmation, first reported as an exclusive by Deadline on April 8, arrives after months of speculation. Hemsworth spent the early part of 2026 promoting Crime 101, his thriller for Amazon MGM Studios, before turning his attention to what comes next. According to sources familiar with the project, it was reading the latest draft of the Extraction 3 script, written by David Weil that convinced him to commit. The summer shoot is being timed carefully around Hemsworth’s other upcoming production, Kockroach, which begins filming this month.
The Extraction franchise has been one of the defining action series of the streaming era. The original film dropped in April 2020, right as global lockdowns sent audiences home, and immediately shattered Netflix viewership records. It earned two Critics Choice nominations, Best Action Movie and Best Actor in an Action Movie for Hemsworth. The 2023 sequel built on that momentum, surpassing the first film’s streaming numbers and landing both instalments on Netflix’s all-time most popular English films list.
The story of black ops mercenary Tyler Rake, adapted from the graphic novel Ciudad by Ande Parks, has now grown into a full franchise universe. AGBO, the company founded by filmmakers Anthony and Joe Russo, recently announced two additional projects tied to the same deal with Netflix: a series starring Omar Sy and a South Korean feature called Tygo, starring Don Lee, Lee Jin-uk, and LISA of BLACKPINK. The Extraction series marks AGBO’s seventh film collaboration with the streamer.
Plot details for the third instalment are being kept tightly under wraps. What is known is that the full core ensemble is reassembling: Hemsworth and Benjamin Grayson produce through Wild State, alongside Hargrave, Patrick Newall, Eric Gitter and Peter Schwerin. Anthony Russo, Joe Russo, Angela Russo-Otstot, Michael Disco, and Ari Costa produce through AGBO. Steven V. Scavelli serves as executive producer.
