NASA Artemis II Crew Splashes Down in Pacific After Historic Moon Mission

The four astronauts of NASA’s Artemis II mission touched down in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of San Diego on Friday, April 10, 2026, completing humanity’s first crewed voyage around the Moon since Apollo 17 in December 1972. Splashdown occurred at approximately 8:07 p.m. EDT (0007 GMT, April 11), right on schedule, after a 10-day mission that set new records for human spaceflight distance.
A Fireball Descent 54 Years in the Making
The final phase of the Artemis II mission was, by NASA’s own description, as dangerous as launch itself. The Orion capsule Integrity slammed into Earth’s atmosphere travelling at roughly 23,840 mph, fast enough, Al Jazeera noted, to cross from New York to Tokyo in under 20 minutes. The intense friction generated temperatures of approximately 2,700 degrees Celsius (4,900 degrees Fahrenheit) around the capsule, hotter than flowing lava.
A planned six-minute communications blackout cut off contact between Mission Control and the crew at the peak of re-entry as plasma formed around the spacecraft. When the signal returned, 11 parachutes deployed in sequence, slowing Orion from over 23,000 mph to roughly 20 mph for splashdown. The entire descent sequence, from atmospheric entry to ocean landing, lasted approximately 13 minutes. NASA Flight Director Jeff Radigan described it as “13 minutes of things that have to go right.”
The Heat Shield Question
The most anxiously monitored element of the return was the Orion capsule’s heat shield. During Artemis I, the uncrewed 2022 test flight to the Moon, the same Avcoat ablative shield lost more material than engineers had predicted, raising safety questions heading into this crewed mission. Rather than replace the shield outright, which would have caused major delays, NASA engineers redesigned the re-entry path. By adjusting the angle of descent, the capsule passed through the most intense heating phase more quickly, reducing total stress on the shield.
Commander Reid Wiseman, speaking before splashdown, expressed confidence in the fix: “If we stick to the new re-entry profile NASA has planned, then this heat shield will be safe to fly,” AP reported via PBS NewsHour. NASA Associate Administrator Amit Kshatriya echoed that confidence in a pre-splashdown briefing, telling engineers: “The crew has done their part. Now we have to do ours.” Redesigned heat shields are planned for Artemis III and beyond.
Records Broken, History Made
The Artemis II crew entered the record books on April 6, 2026, when their Orion spacecraft reached 252,756 miles from Earth, surpassing the previous distance record set by the Apollo 13 crew in 1970. While behind the Moon and out of all radio contact, the four astronauts experienced a total solar eclipse visible only from their vantage point in deep space, as the Moon blocked the Sun completely.
Victor Glover became the first person of colour to fly around the Moon. Christina Koch became the first woman. Canada’s Jeremy Hansen became the first non-American lunar crew member. Glover, reflecting on the journey in a crew press conference carried by Associated Press, said the mission made him think hard about re-entry long before it arrived: “I’ve actually been thinking about entry since April 3, 2023, when we got assigned to this mission.” He described the return through the atmosphere as “riding a fireball”, and called it “profound.” Hansen offered a wider reflection on what the mission meant: “We live on a fragile planet in the vacuum and the void of space. We’re very fortunate to live on planet Earth,” Al Jazeera reported him saying.
Recovery and What Comes Next
The USS John P. Murtha, an amphibious Navy ship, led the recovery operation, supported by military helicopters and aircraft from both the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force. Within two hours of splashdown, the crew was extracted from the capsule by helicopter and transferred to the ship for immediate medical evaluation, before being flown back to NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston.
NASA confirmed a small oxidizer leak in the service module during the final approach, but officials stated it posed no threat to the crew or the return. Weather conditions met all of NASA’s strict “go” criteria, including wave heights below six feet and winds under 28.7 mph.
The next mission in the Artemis programme, Artemis III, is scheduled to attempt a crewed landing near the Moon’s south pole in 2028. Artemis III astronauts will fly with a redesigned heat shield and will also practise docking with a lunar lander in Earth orbit as a stepping stone toward establishing what NASA calls a sustainable lunar base.
