Manchester City produced a dominant second-half display to sweep past Chelsea 3-0 at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, turning a weekend of Arsenal anxiety into a genuine title crisis for the north London side. The gap at the top of the Premier League is now six points, with Pep Guardiola’s team holding a game in hand.
The result was one of contrasts. Arsenal were wracked with nerves in Saturday’s defeat to Bournemouth, which opened the door for City. Guardiola’s side walked straight through it.
The first half offered little sign of what was coming. Chelsea had their moments, Marc Cucurella’s strike was ruled out for offside, and the lively Pedro Neto tested Gianluigi Donnarumma, while Robert Sanchez kept out a Bernardo Silva effort at the other end. Neither team could find the breakthrough, and the sides went in level at the break.
City were a different proposition after the restart, and the difference came down to one man: Rayan Cherki. His inviting cross was converted by Nico O’Reilly six minutes into the second half with a header. The 51st-minute opener settled City and opened Chelsea up. Cherki was at it again six minutes after the opener, dribbling across the Chelsea box before prodding the ball into Marc Guehi, who finished like a centre forward. Two goals in six minutes, and the game was over as a contest.
In the 68th minute, Jérémy Doku won possession, drove into the box, and unleashed a fierce left-footed shot that flew across goalkeeper Robert Sánchez and into the right-hand side of the net to seal the three points. Cherki then helped Doku bundle the ball off Moises Caicedo for the winger to add the third. A big hug from Guardiola when Cherki was subbed off with the game won was well deserved.
The two sides are in contrasting form heading into a crunch period of the season. City beat Arsenal in the Carabao Cup final before dismantling Liverpool and Chelsea, while the Gunners have lost three in a row domestically. “This is about City sending a message, Gary Neville said during commentary. “This is a statement victory.” He added that the sides face an enormous showdown next Sunday, one that will define the season, and that City smells blood heading into a free week to prepare.
For Chelsea, the afternoon was damaging beyond the scoreline. City’s win was made all the more impressive by what the match meant to Chelsea and their top-five challenge. Liam Rosenior’s side now languish four points off Liverpool in the final Champions League qualifying spot, having lost their last three in the league. There were even self-mocking ‘Oles’ from the Chelsea fans as the home team passed the ball in the final moments, and inevitably, boos at full-time.
