OpenAI Releases GPT-5.5 “Spud” is Here

OpenAI GPT-5.5 Spud is here, Its Smartest and Most Autonomous AI Model Yet. The company released the model on Thursday. just one week after competitor Anthropic launched its own latest model. The company describes it as its smartest and most intuitive model to date, and a direct step toward a new era of AI-powered computing.
OpenAI President Greg Brockman said during a press briefing: “It can look at an unclear problem and figure out just what needs to happen next. It really feels like it’s setting the foundation for how we’re going to use computers going forward.”
What OpenAI GPT-5.5 Spud Can Do
Rather than carefully managing every step, users can hand GPT-5.5 a messy, multi-part task and trust it to plan, use tools, check its work, and keep going. The model excels at analyzing data, writing and debugging code, operating software, researching online, and creating documents and spreadsheets. Early access teams reported saving up to 10 hours of work per week, and despite its increased capability, OpenAI says the model matches GPT-5.4’s real-world response speed.
On the pricing side, API access is coming soon at $5 per million input tokens and $30 per million output tokens, with a higher-accuracy GPT-5.5 Pro tier priced at $30 and $180 respectively. OpenAI GPT-5.5 is currently rolling out to Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users in ChatGPT and Codex.
The release also carries a competitive edge. OpenAI has been in an internal “Code Red” state since December 2025, as Anthropic’s Claude steadily gained ground in the enterprise market. OpenAI GPT-5.5 Spud is clearly the company’s answer.
GPT-5.5 is now rolling out to Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users in ChatGPT and Codex. The GPT-5.5 Pro variant is available for Pro, Business, and Enterprise subscribers.
