Google Plans to Invest Up to $40 Billion in Anthropic

Google has confirmed plans to invest up to $40 billion in Anthropic, the AI company behind the Claude family of models. The Google Anthropic investment was first reported by Bloomberg on Friday, April 24, and was confirmed by both companies shortly after.
Google is committing $10 billion immediately at a $350 billion valuation the same figure Anthropic achieved in a February funding round with an additional $30 billion contingent on Anthropic hitting performance targets. The agreement also includes a significant expansion of Anthropic’s computing infrastructure, giving the company deeper access to Google’s cloud and chip resources.
A Partnership Built Over Time
The relationship between the two companies goes back to 2023, when Google invested $300 million in Anthropic for roughly a 10% stake, followed by an additional $2 billion. Ahead of Friday’s announcement, Google’s total investment in the company had already exceeded $3 billion.
The Google Anthropic investment is part of a broader funding push. Just some week earlier, Anthropic reached a deal with Amazon for an additional $5 billion, as part of a wider agreement under which Anthropic expected to spend up to $100 billion for around 5 gigawatts of compute capacity over time.
Anthropic has also expanded its use of Google’s TPU chips and Cloud services, with 5 gigawatts of capacity expected to come online starting in 2027.
Anthropic’s Claude Code assistant has grown significantly in popularity over the past year, and the company is reportedly considering an IPO as soon as October. With both Amazon and Google now backing Anthropic at this scale, the Google Anthropic investment reflects how much the AI industry depends on securing compute capacity to keep pace with rising demand.
