Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has met with the Saudi Arabian Ambassador to Nigeria, Yousef bin Mohammed Al-Balawi, in a significant step to deepen Nigeria-Saudi trade ties. The high-level meeting took place on Friday at the ambassador’s residence in the Diplomatic Quarter, Abuja, with both sides identifying key areas for expanded cooperation.

During the closed-door engagement, the two parties explored investment opportunities across energy, industry, and infrastructure sectors regarded as critical to both economies. Discussions also centred on the outcomes of Dangote’s recent visit to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where promising opportunities for the Dangote Group were identified. The ambassador further noted that Saudi investors are keen to expand their presence in Nigeria and across Africa through the Group’s various companies, signalling that the Nigeria-Saudi trade ties conversation has moved well beyond diplomatic courtesies into concrete deal-making territory.

Dangote described the engagement as productive, expressing strong optimism about future collaborations. He noted that recent engagements in Saudi Arabia have opened fresh areas of cooperation, particularly in sectors that drive industrial growth. The ambassador concluded the evening by hosting a dinner in Dangote’s honour and presenting a commemorative gift, calling it a symbol of the growing bond between both nations. The visit underscores Nigeria’s push to attract Gulf capital as it works to diversify its economic partnerships beyond traditional Western markets.
