Amex Ventures Is Betting Big on Agentic AI to Reinvent Commerce

American Express is no longer just a credit card company. In the era of AI, the financial services giant is working to evolve from a luxury credit card issuer with benefits to a “global agentic concierge” that autonomously handles everything from dinner reservations to complex international trips for its members. And its venture arm, Amex Ventures, is writing the cheques to make that future real.
Shifting the Investment Bar
In a new interview with Crunchbase News, Kevin Tsang, managing director of Amex Ventures, laid out what it now takes to earn an investment from the firm. The bar has shifted toward agentic commerce systems that can navigate complexity and facilitate end-to-end workflows for customers, with appropriate user authorisation and controls. Tsang made clear that surface-level AI tools are no longer enough the most compelling founders now operate companies that incorporate context, execute user decisions, and complete tasks, with personalisation increasingly becoming a key differentiator.
The Amex Ventures agentic AI investment strategy is already visible in its recent portfolio moves. In April, it led a round into business identity infrastructure platform Palm and also wrote a check into Bluefish, an agentic marketing platform that raised a $43 million Series B. The firm has also backed AI site reliability startup Traversal and food delivery platform Wonder, which recently became a dining partner for the American Express Gold Card.
Since joining Amex 15 years ago, Tsang has been responsible for identifying and executing strategic investments in early- to growth-stage startups that fit the American Express thesis, while also leading the firm’s consumer services investment vertical and overseeing global portfolio management.
Since 2011, Amex Ventures has invested in over 70 startups focused on commerce, payments, fraud prevention, data analytics, and security and 2026 marks its most agentic chapter yet.
