Blackstone Closes $13.1B Asia Private Equity Fund, Doubling Last Raise

Blackstone has announced the final close of Blackstone Capital Partners Asia III at $13.1 billion, exceeding its $10 billion target and marking the firm’s largest private equity fundraise in the region. The oversubscribed Blackstone Asia private equity fund reached its hard cap and closed at more than double the capital raised by its predecessor vehicle a result that few in the industry expected given the turbulent global backdrop.

Asia Bets Are Paying Off for Blackstone

The fundraise did not happen in a vacuum. It reflects strong investor interest in Asia despite global volatility fuelled by the Iran crisis, and comes a month after Sweden-based EQT AB raised $15.6 billion to create the region’s largest private equity fund. The competition for Asian deal flow among the world’s biggest alternative asset managers is clearly intensifying.

Global institutional and high-net-worth investors have looked to diversify away from the United States due to high valuations, inflation risks, and overall geopolitical uncertainty, with Asian markets such as Japan and India offering a steady pipeline of buyout and growth opportunities.

Blackstone’s track record in the region gives it credibility to deploy this new capital at scale. Over the last two years, Blackstone has invested more than $7 billion in 12 deals across India and Japan, including Indian AI cloud platform Neysa and Japan’s engineering services provider TechnoPro. The firm has also been active on exits, completing 15 realisations including the listing of International Gemological Institute, the largest lab-grown diamonds certification player, and the listing of Aadhar Housing Finance, India’s largest affordable housing finance business.

Joe Baratta, Global Head of Blackstone Private Equity Strategies, described Asia-Pacific as the fastest-growing region in the world, presenting compelling opportunities to invest at scale. Bain Capital has raised about $10.5 billion in its sixth pan-Asia buyout fund, while KKR, which held the previous record with a $15 billion pan-Asia fund raised in 2021, is currently in the market seeking to raise $15 billion for its next vehicle. The race for Asia is on, and Blackstone just made its biggest statement yet.
