SpaceX Engineering Talent Pipeline from Cornell Racing

A student race car club in Ithaca, New York, has been quietly shaping the company’s engineering leadership for decades. Three of SpaceX’s most senior engineering executives, Bill Riley, Mark Juncosa, and Mike Nicolls, all built formula-style race cars on Cornell University’s Formula SAE team before going on to help build rockets.
The link between SpaceX and Formula SAE is not accidental. Elon Musk has pointed to FSAE success as a sign of strong engineering skill. Bill Riley, now a senior director at SpaceX, said race cars and rockets rely on the same principles of lightweight and efficient design. He now judges Formula SAE Michigan, the same competition he once entered.
SpaceX also recruits heavily from FSAE programs. Each year, about 700 interns join the company, and 50 to 60 come from FSAE teams. Roughly half of the structures team has experience in project-based design competitions, according to internal estimates.
Cornell Racing, a nine-time world champion team of about 65 students, builds a formula-style car over one academic year on a tight budget and without professional guidance. That environment mirrors SpaceX’s own engineering culture. Some FSAE graduates from other universities, including Syracuse, have also joined SpaceX, where recruiters value engineers who question assumptions and push design limits.
