ChatGPT voice mode just got its biggest shake-up yet, and it finally solves an old annoyance. OpenAI has launched GPT-Live, a new generation of voice models built for natural conversation. Unlike previous versions, GPT-Live uses a full-duplex architecture, so it listens and speaks simultaneously. That means users can talk over the assistant mid-response, and it adapts instead of freezing up. According to OpenAI, GPT-Live allows more fluid conversations where ChatGPT can acknowledge that it is listening, respond quickly, pause when a user is thinking, or continue listening without interrupting, as OpenAI explained in its announcement. Consequently, the days of awkward pauses and abrupt cutoffs may finally be ending.

Two versions are rolling out together. GPT-Live-1 becomes the default for Go, Plus, and Pro subscribers, while GPT-Live-1 mini serves free users. Meanwhile, the update brings real-time translation, letting the assistant translate speech as someone talks rather than waiting for a full sentence. Furthermore, ChatGPT can now display visual cards for topics like weather, sports, and stock data during a live conversation. For harder questions, the system quietly hands reasoning tasks to GPT-5.5 in the background, then returns with a spoken answer.

Early testers have praised the shift, though bugs remain.
