1X Neo robot hands are drawing attention for a simple reason: they can feel what they’re holding. Humanoid robots learned to walk years ago, but the hand has remained the harder problem, and 1X’s home robot NEO now ships with tendon-driven hands designed specifically to close that gap. Lifting a wet glass demands precision, fast correction, and just enough restraint not to crush it.
Each hand has 25 degrees of freedom, with 22 joints across fingers and palm, plus three in the wrist, 1X says. The joints are backdrivable, yielding under pressure instead of staying rigid, preventing knocks from becoming struggles. The bigger breakthrough lies in the skin. Tactile sensors detect pressure and sideways movement, helping NEO tighten its grip before a slipping glass reaches the floor.
Factory robots have long used grippers, but they usually handle parts placed in the same position every time. Homes lack that consistency, with objects varying in shape, weight, position, or even being wet. NEO’s hands have IP68 water resistance and food-safe materials, making them suitable for kitchens and sinks. The fingers also bend beyond typical human range, wrapping around awkwardly shaped objects.
Impressive hardware alone does not guarantee capable housework. NEO must identify objects, choose the correct grip, and repeat tasks reliably in cluttered rooms without human resets. For unfamiliar chores, 1X offers “Expert Mode,” allowing remote human guidance. It helps scale deployment but highlights that full autonomy remains unfinished. NEO, powered by Redwood AI, learns and repeats chores and is available for pre-order with a $200 deposit.
