AMD and Anthropic are joining forces in a deal that combines massive AI computing capacity, software development, and a multibillion-dollar investment. Under the AMD Anthropic deal, Anthropic will deploy up to 2 gigawatts of AMD Instinct MI450 Series GPUs in AMD Helios rack-scale solutions.
The first gigawatt deployment will begin in the first half of 2027. Meanwhile, AMD plans to invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic through a strategic equity investment. The deal strengthens the chipmaker’s relationship with one of the world’s leading AI companies. “We are thrilled to deepen our partnership with Anthropic and deploy AMD Helios at gigawatt scale,†said Dr Lisa Su, chair and CEO of AMD.
Claude AI Workloads to Run on AMD GPUs
Anthropic’s demand for its Claude AI models is growing rapidly. This requires a significant increase in computing power. The planned deployment will help meet this growing need. Both companies will also collaborate to optimise workloads on AMD Instinct GPUs using Claude. Additionally, the partnership will accelerate the development of AMD’s ROCm open software platform.
This collaboration could help AMD improve the performance and usability of its AI hardware. At the same time, Anthropic will gain access to the computing resources needed for its growing AI workloads. Beyond the hardware deal, AMD plans to adopt Claude across its engineering and product development teams. Anthropic’s AI technology could support product development, code writing, and code reviews. It could also assist with internal engineering workflows.
The AMD Anthropic deal provides a major opportunity for AMD to strengthen its position in the competitive AI accelerator market. For Anthropic, the agreement provides additional computing capacity. This will become increasingly important as AI workloads grow larger and more demanding. Furthermore, the partnership could give developers and businesses access to a broader AI infrastructure ecosystem. This comes as AMD expands its role beyond traditional chip manufacturing.
