Nvidia is making another major move in artificial intelligence, agreeing to pay $6 billion to license technology from AI startup Poolside and offering jobs to more than 100 of the company’s employees.
According to Bloomberg, the agreement involves licensing Poolside’s AI model technology, while Nvidia will extend employment offers to more than 100 workers. The deal is part of Nvidia’s broader push to expand its role in AI beyond its chips.
Reports indicate that Nvidia will make offers to 109 Poolside employees who worked on the company’s AI model, Laguna. The agreement also covers Poolside’s Model Factory, the technology the startup uses to develop AI models.
Nvidia is separately investing $1 billion in Poolside at a reported $12 billion pre-money valuation. Importantly, the arrangement is not an acquisition. Poolside will continue operating independently, while its three founders are expected to remain with the company.
The deal highlights Nvidia’s growing interest in AI software and models as it looks beyond its dominant position in AI chips.
For Poolside, the agreement provides significant financial support while allowing the startup to continue operating as an independent company.
The unusual structure also follows Nvidia’s recent deals involving AI and technology startups, showing how the company is increasingly using licensing agreements and strategic investments to strengthen its position across the AI ecosystem.
