South African-founded AI startup Verascient has raised $1.2 million, approximately R19.2 million, in its first funding round as it looks to expand its engineering team and strengthen its enterprise AI offering.
The funding round was led by Founder Collective, with participation from Andrena Ventures, Cambridge Enterprise, Summit Ventures and several angel investors.
Founded by Keagan Stokoe and Emile Ferreira, the Cape Town-based company focused on helping businesses make better use of information spread across documents, emails, spreadsheets, meetings and internal systems.
Verascient organises this scattered information into shared organisational context and uses it to build AI-powered workflows and agents that can support everyday business operations.
The startup is initially targeting industries such as financial services, insurance and logistics, where businesses often deal with large amounts of disconnected information.
At the centre of Verascient’s technology a temporal knowledge graph designed to organise company information while maintaining its history, permissions and source information.
The new funding will allow the company to grow its engineering team, develop its technology and support more enterprise deployments. Verascient is also looking to recruit highly skilled AI engineers in South Africa as it prepares for international growth.
The raise highlights growing investor interest in AI infrastructure that helps businesses move beyond experimenting with AI tools and toward integrating AI into their daily operations.
