OpenAI has reportedly spent the past several months buying tens of thousands of Apple Mac minis and Mac Studios. But these computers are not being bought for employees to work on.
According to The Information, OpenAI is using the machines for reinforcement learning and training AI agents that can use computers.
The reason is simple: computer-use AI agents need access to many separate computer environments where they can practice tasks repeatedly. The more environments available, the more experiments and training sessions can run at the same time.
That is where the Macs become important.
Rather than using its usual large GPU clusters for every type of AI training, OpenAI reportedly needs thousands of individual computers that can act as separate environments for its agents. Apple’s compact Mac minis and more powerful Mac Studios are well suited to this kind of large-scale setup.
And OpenAI is not the only one looking at Apple hardware.
Anthropic is reportedly using similar Mac hardware for related AI work, but instead of buying thousands of machines, it rents access to Macs through AWS.
The report was published on August 31, 2026, although the reported purchases themselves happened over the previous several months.
AI companies are not just competing to build better models anymore. They are also competing for the computing infrastructure needed to train the next generation of AI agents.
