xAI’s Grok Outages Leave Users Frustrated as High Demand Batters Chatbot’s Reliability

Elon Musk’s xAI is facing a growing reliability problem, as users across the globe continue to report xAI Grok outages that have disrupted access to the AI chatbot for days at a stretch.

The latest wave of complaints surfaced around April 21, 2026, when hundreds of users began encountering a now-familiar error message: “Grok is under high demand. Please try again later or upgrade your plan to get priority access.” For many, that message has not budged in over 24 hours. Third-party monitoring platform StatusGator recorded more than 400 user-submitted outage reports within a single day, with affected users reporting issues from Florida to Brussels to multiple cities across Asia.

A Pattern That Won’t Go Away

The xAI Grok outages are not a one-off. xAI’s own status history at status.x.ai shows a trail of confirmed incidents throughout 2026, including a seven-hour disruption on January 27, a two-hour outage on March 10, and multiple shorter service drops in February. Free-tier users appear to bear the brunt, as xAI reportedly prioritises paid subscribers during peak loads.

The disruptions stem from Grok’s tight integration with the X platform, meaning any strain on shared infrastructure cascades directly to the chatbot. Grok’s Colossus supercomputer cluster and cloud capacity are under pressure from compute-heavy tasks like image generation and real-time reasoning, and rapid user growth is outpacing supply.

With no official statement from xAI explaining the latest disruption, frustrated users are turning to alternatives like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude. The silence from xAI is drawing as much criticism as the downtime itself.

As Grok scales, reliability is becoming its most visible test.
