NRS Warns Nigerians: Fake Vehicle Tax Website Is Targeting You
The Nigeria Revenue Service has fired back at a viral social media post that has been causing panic among vehicle owners across the country. The NRS warns Nigerians the fake vehicle tax website making rounds online definitely not connected to any government agency, and the so-called new tax simply does not exist.
A viral infographic had been circulating on social media alleging that Nigeria introduced a surcharge on imported vehicles with large engine capacities, suggesting a 2–4 per cent levy would apply to cars with engines above 2,000cc effective July 1, 2026. The post further claimed smaller vehicles, electric cars, and mass transit buses would be exempt, and that the policy formed part of wider fiscal reforms including reduced import tariffs.
What the NRS Is Saying
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Special Adviser to the NRS Chairman and spokesperson Dare Adekanmbi said the claim did not originate from the Service or any authorised government institution, adding that the fake notice was allegedly designed to deceive members of the public.
The agency also clarified that the website circulated in the viral post http://www.firs.gov.ng is not its official portal, and confirmed that its correct website is http://www.nrs.gov.ng.
The NRS noted the fake message deliberately designed to appear credible, including the use of official-looking government branding to mislead unsuspecting Nigerians. The agency urged citizens to rely strictly on verified official channels and avoid making any payments based on the fabricated information.
As misinformation continues to spread rapidly online in Nigeria, this incident underscores the growing risk of digitally manipulated content targeting ordinary citizens.
