Anthropic’s $1.8 Billion Akamai Cloud Deal Signals Explosive AI Demand
Anthropic has quietly become the customer behind the biggest deal in Akamai Technologies’ 28-year history. The AI company signed a $1.8 billion, seven-year cloud computing agreement with Akamai to keep pace with explosive demand for its Claude AI platform, according to Bloomberg, which identified Anthropic as the unnamed “leading frontier model provider” disclosed during Akamai’s first-quarter earnings on Thursday. Both companies declined to comment beyond what was publicly announced.
The Anthropic Akamai cloud deal immediately rattled markets. Akamai’s stock surged 27% on the news its largest single-day rally in over two decades with the contract structured to deliver roughly $257 million per year at full ramp. Revenue from the commitment expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026, contributing approximately $20 to $25 million during that period.
The Compute Scramble Behind the Deal
The deal is no coincidence. At Anthropic’s “Code with Claude” developer conference in San Francisco, CEO Dario Amodei revealed the company had experienced 80x growth in annualized revenue and usage in the first quarter of 2026, driven by surging Claude adoption for coding and automation far outpacing its own internal projection of 10x growth. That kind of acceleration demands infrastructure at scale, and fast.
The Anthropic Akamai cloud deal lands inside a 72-hour window of major Anthropic compute moves. Days earlier, Anthropic announced a deal with SpaceX to take all available capacity at the Colossus 1 data centre in Memphis, adding more than 220,000 Nvidia GPUs and over 300 megawatts of power. Anthropic has also expanded its cloud commitments with Google, AWS, CoreWeave, and Nvidia.
For Akamai, a company that built its name delivering web content and cybersecurity services, the deal marks a pivotal transformation. Its Cloud Infrastructure Services revenue grew 40% year-over-year to $95 million in Q1 2026, and the Anthropic contract signals that the AI compute arms race is opening doors for infrastructure providers long overlooked by frontier AI labs.
