Southwest Airlines Humanoid Robot Flight Ban Follows Viral Boarding Videos

A robot bought a plane ticket, boarded a Southwest Airlines flight, and sat in its own seat. Then came the policy change. Southwest Airlines issued an official ban on “human-like or animal-like robots” from all its flights. The rule covers both cabin seating and checked baggage, regardless of size or purpose. No exceptions.
What Happened Before the Ban
The story begins with “Stewie,†a 3.5-foot humanoid robot. Aaron Mehdizadeh, founder of The Robot Studio in North Dallas, bought a standard passenger seat for Stewie on a flight from Las Vegas to Dallas Love Field. He usually rents the robot out for events. Videos of the unusual trip quickly spread online.
However, Stewie was not the only robot to board a commercial flight recently. On April 30, Eily Ben-Abraham of Elite Event Robotics brought another robot named Bebop on a Southwest flight from Oakland to San Diego. The flight faced a delay of nearly one hour after crew members noticed the robot sat beside an aisle, which violated airline policy for large carry-on items. Crew members also questioned the robot’s power source before allowing the flight to continue.
Southwest Airlines Humanoid Robot Flight Ban: The Safety Reason
Southwest did not describe the ban as a reaction to viral robot videos. Instead, the airline pointed to safety concerns surrounding lithium-ion batteries used in humanoid robots. A Southwest spokesperson told CNN that the batteries could pose risks during flights.
The airline recently introduced stricter rules for lithium-ion batteries and portable chargers. Passengers can now carry only one portable lithium charger on Southwest flights. In addition, travellers cannot place chargers in overhead compartments or plug them into in-seat power outlets. The airline also bans portable chargers from checked baggage because of potential smoke and fire risks.
Earlier, Southwest allowed Stewie to continue the trip after staff moved the robot to a window seat and removed its battery. However, that option will no longer apply under the updated policy.
The airline policy now states that Southwest Airlines does not allow human-like or animal-like robots in cabins or checked baggage, regardless of their purpose or size. The company defines a human-like robot as one designed to imitate human appearance, movement, or behaviour. It uses a similar definition for animal-like robots. Meanwhile, other robots and robotic toys must fit inside approved carry-on bags and follow existing battery rules.
Mehdizadeh told reporters he still hopes Southwest may reconsider the policy if companies can meet safety standards. At the same time, the decision has raised broader industry concerns. As lifelike robots become more common in public spaces, many now wonder whether other airlines will adopt similar restrictions. So far, no major airline has announced a matching policy. Still, robotics firms, event organizers, and robot rental companies continue watching Southwest closely for possible industry-wide changes.
