SpaceX Starship V3 Flight 12: The Launch That Defines a Generation

This rocket has a lot riding on it. SpaceX’s 400-foot Starship V3 is the most powerful and capable version the company has ever built. The stakes are enormous. NASA has chosen Starship to land its Artemis 4 astronauts on the moon in 2028. However, SpaceX has not yet sent any Starship vehicle into full orbit since test flights began in 2023.

A Scrub, Then a Second Chance

It came agonisingly close on May 21, 2026. The 407-foot rocket was poised to begin a space-skimming journey from Texas, extending halfway around the world.

However, a cascade of problems halted the countdown with less than 30 seconds remaining. SpaceX scrubbed the mission after dipping in and out of multiple holds at T-minus 40 seconds. Teams worked overnight to resolve the issues. SpaceX prepared for a second attempt on May 22. The launch window opens in the early afternoon from Starbase, Texas.

SpaceX Starship V3 Flight 12: What Makes This Version Different

Starship V3 introduces several upgrades designed to make the more than 400-foot rocket stronger and more efficient. The Super Heavy booster uses 33 Raptor engines. At T-minus 3 seconds, all engines ignite and lift the system from the launchpad.

By T+45 seconds, the rocket reaches Max Q, the point of maximum aerodynamic pressure as it moves through Earth’s dense atmosphere. Then, at T+2:22, Super Heavy shuts down its engines and separates from the spacecraft. After separation, the upper-stage Starship activates its six engines and continues the mission.

Meanwhile, the V3 design will serve as the foundation for future crewed lunar missions. Because of that, its performance in this test could significantly influence NASA’s Artemis 4 timeline.

Notably, there has been a long gap since the previous Starship mission. Flight 11 launched in October 2025, while Flight 12 marks the first launch of 2026. SpaceX completed five Starship missions in 2025 but has managed only one launch so far in 2026. As a result, analysts remain concerned about NASA’s planned 2028 lunar mission schedule.

SpaceX also has high expectations for this Starship V3 test. NASA selected Starship to land Artemis 4 astronauts on the moon in 2028. However, the company has not yet achieved a full orbital Starship mission since testing began in 2023. In addition, SpaceX still needs to demonstrate astronaut support systems, orbital refuelling, Orion capsule docking, and lunar landing capabilities. Starship V3 is expected to become the vehicle that advances those goals.
