Sui Network Suffers Hours-Long Outage Months After Previous Downtime

The Sui network outage is back, and this time it is raising louder questions about the reliability of one of crypto’s most hyped layer-1 blockchains. Just barely five months after its last “network stall,” Sui’s blockchain is suffering another significant period of downtime.
The stall was first identified and investigated on Thursday morning, leading to more than five hours of a major outage while the Sui team worked toward a solution. The blockchain’s official X account confirmed the situation around 10:30 a.m. ET, warning users that transactions may be paused and that updates would follow as soon as available.
By 3:40 p.m. ET, the Sui network status page had been updated to indicate that a fix was rolling out to validators, though the issue had not been fully resolved at the time of initial reporting.
This is not the first time the network has struggled to stay online. Sui last suffered a similar “network stall” in January, going down for about six hours, and prior to that, a significant validator issue in 2024 prevented transactions from processing. The pattern is drawing inevitable comparisons to the early struggles of rival blockchain Solana, which famously battled repeated outages before stabilizing.
The Sui network outage has not been without market consequences. The network’s native SUI token fell 5.4% in the last 24 hours to trade at around $0.92, outpacing losses from Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other major coins. That decline is particularly notable given that SUI hit an all-time high of $5.35 in January 2025, meaning the token has since shed more than 82% from that peak.
Beyond the token price, confidence in the project is a bigger concern. Earlier this year, the first SUI ETFs hit the U.S. market, with products from Canary and Grayscale offering exposure to the SUI token and staking reward access to traditional investors, a milestone that made the latest outage land at an awkward time for the project’s institutional ambitions.
Sui was launched in 2023 and developed by Mysten Labs, a spinoff of Meta’s Diem project. The network previously raised $300 million in a Series B round that valued it at $2 billion in 2022. Despite that pedigree, the recurring downtime is a reminder that technical resilience remains an ongoing challenge for even well-funded blockchain networks.
For a platform built to compete with fast layer-1 blockchains like Solana, suffering repeated stalls in quick succession is the kind of narrative that can be difficult to shake. All eyes are now on whether the Sui team’s fix holds, and for how long.
