Ethio Telecom Expands 4G LTE to 52 Ethiopian Towns

Ethiopia’s biggest telecom is not waiting for demand to arrive. It is building ahead of it. Ethio Telecom extended its 4G LTE mobile broadband network to 52 additional towns across nine Ethiopian regions. The Ethio Telecom 4G LTE expansion is the latest phase in a national rollout that has already reached 99.8% of the country’s population.

Ethio Telecom has expanded its 4G LTE mobile broadband network to 52 additional towns across Ethiopia. As a result, high-speed connectivity now reaches communities in Oromia, Amhara, Southern Ethiopia, Gambella, Benishangul-Gumuz, Harari, Somali, Tigray, and Afar regions.

In particular, Oromia and Amhara account for the largest share of the newly connected towns, together representing about two-thirds of the rollout. Meanwhile, smaller expansions also appear in Gambella, Benishangul-Gumuz, Somali, and Afar.

Furthermore, this regional spread reflects a deliberate rollout strategy. First, the operator prioritises high-population areas. After that, it extends coverage to historically underserved communities in later phases.

Ethio Telecom 4G LTE Expansion: Why It Matters

Growing demand for mobile financial services, digital commerce, online education, and government digital platforms continues to drive the need for faster and more reliable connectivity outside Ethiopia’s major urban centres.

Expanded LTE coverage is expected to support these services while strengthening digital inclusion across newly connected communities. For the millions of Ethiopians using mobile money, banking, and e-government services through their phones, a 4G connection is not a luxury.

It is the difference between a service working at a useful speed and barely loading at all. In June 2026, Ethio Telecom announced the expansion at a time when roughly 80% of its covered population already had access to 4G, according to earlier company data from April 2026.

Ethio Telecom Network Strategy Context

The expansion comes amid an accelerated period of network modernisation within Ethio Telecom’s operations. In recent years, the operator has undertaken multiple LTE expansion projects and infrastructure upgrades designed to increase broadband coverage and improve service quality nationwide.

The June 1 announcement follows earlier expansions: 21 additional cities connected in March 2026, and 114 towns in the South-South East Region in a prior project. Together, these phases are closing the gap between Ethiopia’s urban broadband haves and the smaller towns that have waited considerably longer.

Ethio Telecom also operates as the principal digital infrastructure layer for Ethiopia’s national digital transformation programmes, meaning every town added to the 4G map carries implications well beyond individual consumer access.
