Google Launches Fake Call Detector on Android as Voice Cloning Fraud Hits $400 Billion
Google has rolled out a new security feature on Android that detects and flags suspected impersonation calls in real time. The Google fake call detector Android feature is launching globally this month for devices running Android 12 and above, starting with Pixel phones, and works automatically without any setup from users.
The announcement comes as AI-powered voice cloning scams reach crisis levels worldwide. INTERPOL’s March 2026 Global Financial Fraud Threat Assessment identified impersonation fraud as one of the leading contributors to over $400 billion in global financial losses, while the U.S. Federal Trade Commission recorded $2.95 billion in losses from impersonation scams in 2024 alone.
How the Digital Handshake Works
Google describes the feature as a digital handshake between two devices. When a contact calls and both parties use Phone by Google, the caller’s device sends a silent encrypted signal confirming the call is genuinely originating from their device. If a scammer spoofs the number, that signal is absent and the recipient’s phone immediately pings the real contact to verify. If confirmed as a fake, an on-screen alert tells the user to hang up immediately.
The entire verification process runs on end-to-end encrypted Rich Communication Services technology, keeping the exchange completely private. Crucially, Google built the feature on RCS an open standard so other manufacturers and app developers can adopt the same protection across the wider industry.
Scammers have sharpened their methods by combining two tactics: spoofing familiar phone numbers via internet-based software, then layering AI deepfake audio to replicate a trusted voice. The Google fake call detector Android feature is designed to neutralise both tactics at once, removing the burden of detection from the user entirely.
Phone by Google is already the default phone application on the majority of Android devices globally. Users running a different default app can install it from the Play Store to activate the protection.
