American Airlines Starlink WiFi Deal Covers 500 Planes from 2027

American Airlines just picked a side in the in-flight WiFi war. The Group plans to install SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet service across more than 500 narrowbody aircraft beginning in early 2027, deepening an industrywide race among carriers to offer faster and more reliable onboard connectivity as they compete for premium travellers. Bloomberg reported the deal on May 26, 2026. This is not just a hardware upgrade. It is America finally admitting that free WiFi was only the first battle.
What the American Airlines Starlink WiFi Deal Covers
The rollout will cover much of its domestic and short-haul international fleet, including Airbus A321neo and A321XLR aircraft entering the fleet. The service will use Starlink’s low Earth orbit satellite network, which American said is capable of supporting streaming, gaming, and video calls.
The service will be available free to AAdvantage members. However, not everything gets upgraded. American’s legacy A319S and A320S on Intelsat and ViaSat will not be converted. Boeing 737s and two-cabin regional jets will not be included either. That leaves roughly half the fleet on older systems for now.
What the American Airlines Starlink WiFi Deal Covers

American was one of the last major US airlines to make free WiFi part of its brand. It only launched its AT&T-sponsored free WiFi program in January 2026. By then, free WiFi had already stopped being a differentiator. Free WiFi is no longer the differentiator. It is becoming table stakes.
Now the real fight is about quality, and older geostationary satellite systems no longer hold up. They were good enough when customers paid and limited their use. But at no marginal cost to the passenger, bandwidth demands overwhelm their performance. American was evaluating Starlink and Amazon LEO as recently as March 2026 for the service. Starlink won. SpaceX has already won contracts with United Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Hawaiian, and others. America is the latest major holdout to fall in line.
The Bigger Picture for SpaceX
The American Airlines deal matters well beyond aviation. SpaceX’s IPO, set for June 12, 2026, includes Starlink as its primary revenue driver. The agreement marks a notable turn in America’s connectivity strategy. American’s 500-plane order adds scale to Starlink’s aviation portfolio at exactly the moment SpaceX is preparing for public markets. As Starlink secures more airline deals, the argument for its enterprise value gets harder to challenge. For travellers, the upgrade starts in Q1 2027 on Airbus narrowbody routes. For SpaceX, the deal lands at the best possible time.
