Apple Intelligence Gets Major Upgrade Across iPhone Apps at WWDC 2026
Apple made its biggest push yet into AI at WWDC 2026, announcing Apple Intelligence upgrades that stretch across nearly every major app on the iPhone, from how you browse the web to how you edit a photo you took three years ago.
Safari is now smart enough to group your open tabs by topic automatically and suggest related ones to add. A new page monitor watches websites for changes and alerts you when something updates, whether that is a price drop or a breaking story. Apple is also letting users build a custom Safari extension using plain text prompts, something that previously required coding knowledge.
Security gets a meaningful improvement too. Compromised passwords can now be updated with a single tap, with Apple and Safari handling the login process on your behalf through AI.
In Messages, the app can now surface photos from your library based on a text description, so you no longer have to scroll endlessly to find what you are looking for. Calendar users can create events just by typing naturally, mentioning who should attend and when. The Phone app goes even further: it can now pull live context from apps like Mail and Messages during an active call, surfacing your flight details from email in real time if you are on the phone with an airline. It is Apple’s answer to similar features from Google, and a sign that the real AI competition is happening at the operating system level.
Shortcuts gets an overhaul that brings vibe-coding energy to everyday users. Instead of manually building automations step by step, you can now describe what you want in plain language and the app builds the workflow for you.
The Apple Intelligence upgrades in Photos are just as significant. A new Spatial Reframing tool lets users drag and reposition the perspective of a photo as if they had moved the camera when taking the original shot. Apple’s generative models then fill in any new edges convincingly. The Extend tool works similarly, expanding the borders of an image to give subjects more room or to fix a crooked horizon. The Cleanup tool, already popular for removing distractions, now produces sharper and more realistic results. Apple confirmed these features work on older photos already in your library, not just new ones.
Image Playground is also being updated with a more capable model that can produce photorealistic images, and a new API will let third-party developers tap into image generation tools directly.
