Cloudflare has announced the Cloudflare Monetization Gateway, a product that gives Cloudflare customers the ability to charge for any asset they protect. That includes web pages, datasets, APIs, or MCP tools. The waitlist is open now.
The timing is deliberate. For 30 years, the web has traded content for human attention, monetised through ads, subscriptions, and e-commerce. However, AI agents are rapidly becoming the dominant Internet users. An agent does not look at ads. It reads a page once, takes what it needs, and moves on. Consequently, AI crawlers already consume content at rates far beyond human traffic, with little compensation flowing back to creators.
The Cloudflare Monetization Gateway therefore builds toward usage-based pricing for everything. Agents pay per request, per token, or per outcome. For instance, a web search costs a few cents per call, or a support escalation costs $0.99 only when resolved successfully.
The payment mechanism is x402, an open protocol that enables payment directly over HTTP. The exchange works simply: a client requests a payment-gated resource. The server responds with a 402 Payment Required status, a price, and a destination wallet. The client pays and resends the request with proof of payment. A facilitator verifies the payment, and the server returns the resource. No checkout page. No separate billing API. Settlement goes peer-to-peer, directly to the seller’s wallet, with sub-second finality.
Stablecoins such as Open USD and USDC power the rails. They allow buyers to transfer tiny sums across the Internet, incur negligible fees, and settle in under a second. Traditional payment rails cannot support this today.
In practice, Cloudflare handles the metering, payment exchange, and settlement at the edge. Developers keep their rules, their prices, and their revenue, with no need to onboard buyers or build a billing system. Teams can set rules via the Cloudflare dashboard, the Cloudflare API, or Terraform. Planned capabilities include per-route pricing for specific REST verbs, variable pricing based on compute consumed, and the ability to intercept unauthorised requests and return payment requirements instead.
For Nigerian and African developers who build APIs and data products for global audiences, this is a notable opening. The Cloudflare Monetization Gateway removes the need to build a bespoke payments layer. Small teams can therefore monetise APIs on the same terms as large enterprises.
The waitlist is now open for Cloudflare customers. Developers interested in monetising web pages, datasets, APIs, or MCP tools can join the early access list here.
