Ukraine’s World-First Humanoid Robot Deployment Faces Challenges

While most humanoid robot startups are teaching their machines to fold laundry and make coffee, one San Francisco company sent two of its robots to a war zone. The Foundation Future Industries has conducted field tests of its Phantom MK-1 robot in Ukraine. Foundation Future Industries, a startup founded in 2024, aims to leverage humanoid robots for military and industrial work rather than for household tasks or the service sector.

The startup has already tested its humanoid robots in Ukraine, in what is widely described as the first known deployment of humanoid robots in a combat zone.

What the Foundation Humanoid Robots Ukraine Tests Found

CEO Sankaet Pathak told CNBC that testing in Ukraine proved the robots can handle supply pickups that currently put soldiers at risk. At present, the robots can carry about 44 pounds. However, they still lack waterproofing and sufficient battery life for sustained deployment. As a result, Foundation plans to send upgraded Phantom 2 units to Ukraine later this year. According to Pathak, the new models will feature “superhuman abilities” and double the payload capacity.

Meanwhile, the company is targeting front-line deployment with the US military within the next 12 to 18 months. Although Foundation operates in an increasingly crowded humanoid robotics market, it has distinguished itself through its willingness to explore military applications for its technology. In addition, Pathak plans to scale production to thousands of units this year while also preparing for frontline testing with the US military over the next 18 months.

The political dimension is unavoidable. Eric Trump, the second son of the sitting president, recently joined the Foundation as chief strategy adviser. The company has received $24 million in government research contracts across the Army, Navy, and Air Force for feasibility testing in inspection, logistics, and weapons handling.

A Foundation spokesperson told CNBC that Eric Trump had been an investor in the firm before stepping in as an adviser, and that the two parties shared a vision of bringing manufacturing back to the US. Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren alleged the contracts were “corruption in plain sight.” The political scrutiny runs alongside a broader credibility problem. The foundation also attracted scrutiny after suggesting it had close ties to General Motors, claims GM subsequently rejected. The company’s credibility is a live question.

What This Signals for the Industry

The plans and the firm’s growing ties to Washington represent yet another example of how artificial intelligence and robotics are beginning to transform modern warfare and become a focus of national security. Foundation is not the only company moving in this direction.

However, it is the first to have robots in an active combat zone. Foundation’s production targets are 40 units in 2025, 10,000 in 2026, and 50,000 by the end of 2027. Those numbers would require a manufacturing scale-up of 250 times in two years on a total funding base of roughly $21 million. The Foundation’s stated policy is that human operators retain final authority over lethal decisions, a “human-in-the-loop” commitment that the Pentagon’s own Directive 3000.09 on autonomy in weapon systems requires.

The gap between the company’s ambitions and its verified capabilities is wide. So is the gap between what humanoid military robots could eventually do and what international law currently says about autonomous weapons. Both gaps are now very much open for debate.
