Gemini XPRIZE Offers $2M for AI Businesses Built in 90 Days

Quick Leads
- XPRIZE and Google have launched the Gemini XPRIZE, a 90 day hackathon challenging entrants to build a real, revenue generating AI business.
- The competition was unveiled at Google I/O on May 19, 2026, with a total prize pool of $2,000,000 USD spread across 25 winners.
- Submissions close on August 17, 2026, and winners will be announced around September 25, 2026.
- The challenge targets individuals, teams, and small organizations with under 25 employees who can build using Google Cloud and the Gemini API.
- Entrants must show actual revenue, real users, and AI powered operations rather than just a working prototype.
The Gemini XPRIZE is pitching itself as more than a typical hackathon. Rather than rewarding the cleverest demo, the competition wants entrants to stand up an actual business in three months, complete with paying customers and verifiable revenue. Anyone considering the Gemini XPRIZE should know it is built around five categories: Education & Human Potential, Entrepreneurship & Job Creation, Small Business Services, Money & Financial Access, and Professional Services Access.
To qualify, a project must run on at least one Google Cloud product, and any submission that uses large language model functionality is required to include at least one Gemini API call, though teams are free to mix in other providers alongside it. Judging happens in two stages. The first is a pass or fail check on whether the idea is viable and actually uses the required tools. Submissions that clear that bar move into a second round scored equally across three criteria, business viability, how deeply AI runs the operation, and the real world impact within the chosen category.
The prize structure rewards a wide field rather than a single winner. First place takes home $500,000, second place gets $200,000, and three more teams split $100,000 prizes. Fifteen additional runner up prizes worth $50,000 each are up for grabs, along with five category specific prizes of $50,000. A project can only win one prize maximum.
Registration is open now through Devpost, and full eligibility details, submission requirements, and the official rules are laid out on the Gemini XPRIZE website and its accompanying rules page. Entrants who are residents of countries under US sanctions, along with employees of the sponsor or judges, are excluded from taking part. Anyone hoping to compete for the Gemini XPRIZE money will need to show their business actually made sales, not just that it looked good in a pitch video.
