Meta just gave AI enthusiasts something they can actually own and run themselves. The company has introduced Muse Glimmer, a 30-billion-parameter AI model designed to live entirely on your own computer rather than a data center somewhere. That means no cloud subscription, no internet dependency, and no sending your data off to a third-party server every time you ask it to do something.

Meta designed this model specifically for “agentic” work: the kind of AI that doesn’t just chat, but actually does things. Think an assistant that can organize your files, draft your messages, write and debug code, or work through a multi-step task from a single instruction, all without ever leaving your laptop.

To pull that off on regular consumer hardware, Meta’s engineers shrank the model using a technique called quantization, squeezing its memory footprint down from around 55GB to under 20GB. That’s small enough to run on a single gaming-grade GPU, a modern Mac, or specialized “AI PCs” from partners like AMD and NVIDIA, both of which have already published guides for running it locally.

Muse Glimmer is released under the Apache 2.0 license, meaning developers and businesses can use, modify, and build on it freely a continuation of Meta’s long-running open-source AI push against more closed rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic. It’s also the first public release from Meta Superintelligence Labs, the elite AI unit Meta assembled under Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang, hinting at bigger open releases still to come.
