The Federal Government has established a dedicated Cyber Diplomacy Unit within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s engagement on artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, and global digital governance. The initiative was announced by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, during a seminar on anticipatory cyber and digital diplomacy in Abuja.
According to Tuggar, the new unit will coordinate Nigeria’s cyber-related foreign policy, build the country’s capacity for international negotiations on digital issues, promote partnerships that improve cyber resilience, and ensure Nigeria plays a stronger role in shaping global rules for cyberspace.
The minister said emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and the growing importance of data are changing the way nations conduct diplomacy. He stressed that Nigeria must actively participate in these discussions rather than remain on the sidelines.
The Cyber Diplomacy Unit also expected to support Nigeria’s efforts in addressing issues such as data privacy, election security, malicious cyber activities, internet governance, and ethical AI development through international cooperation.
The move aligns with the Federal Government’s broader digital transformation agenda, which includes expanding AI adoption and increasing Nigeria’s influence in international technology policy.
