a16z’s Peter Levine Returns Full-Time to Investing After Beating Cancer

Peter Levine, an Andreessen Horowitz general partner who stepped back from active investing six years ago after being treated for a rare form of cancer, has made a full recovery and is returning to full-time work, the firm confirmed this week. The news marks a significant moment for one of Silicon Valley’s most seasoned venture investors and a personal triumph few in the industry could have anticipated when he first went quiet.

Peter Levine returns to a16z full-time investing with a clarity he says the experience gave him. In his own announcement on X (formerly Twitter), Levine said he was returning with “a sharpened sense of purpose and a deep optimism for the future, both personally and professionally,” after navigating what he described as some of life’s most taxing personal hurdles.

The Battle That Paused a Career

Levine had previously revealed in a personal essay on the a16z website that his diagnosis involved appendix cancer that spread into his abdominal cavity a condition known as pseudomyxoma peritonei and that without a massive open abdominal surgery and chemotherapy, his prognosis would have been terminal. The surgery alone lasted nine hours.

Levine joined Andreessen Horowitz in 2011, focusing on AI and infrastructure investing, and has sat on the boards of companies including Pinecone, Shield AI, Mixpanel, and Labelbox. He also led the firm’s investments in Figma and GitHub, the latter acquired by Microsoft. His return puts one of a16z’s most experienced dealmakers back in action at a time when competition across the AI and enterprise investment landscape is fiercer than ever.

Fellow a16z General Partner Sarah Wang publicly celebrated the news on X, calling Levine a legend whose return is long overdue.
