Aptoide Games Debuts as First Rival Store Inside Google Play

Aptoide Games has become the first rival app store to appear directly inside Google Play. This marks a rare crack in Google’s grip on Android distribution. The gaming-focused marketplace, run by Portuguese company Aptoide, now lists inside Google Play in the United States. Users simply search for it, tap install, and gain a second app shop. No sideloading and no APK file get involved. As a result, installing a competing storefront now feels as easy as installing any other app.
This launch did not happen by choice, however. A US judge ruled in 2024 that Google must open Play to rival marketplaces. Google appealed that ruling and lost. Consequently, Google built a dedicated section inside Play for third-party stores, according to The Verge’s report. Meanwhile, Aptoide frames the moment as far bigger than a routine product rollout. Co-founder and CEO Paulo Trezentos called it “much more than a product launch” in Aptoide’s official launch announcement.
Founded in 2009, Aptoide brings real scale to this experiment. The marketplace now serves roughly 25 million monthly active users. It also offers access to more than 400,000 Android applications. The United States remains its largest market by far. Notably, this is not Aptoide’s first appearance on Google’s platform. Aptoide distributed apps through Google Play during Android’s early years. Google’s own rules on competing stores eventually pushed it out.
Still, real limits remain in place for now. Aptoide Games sells games only at this stage. Google Play also carries it exclusively within the United States. Google Play remains the default store on every Android phone regardless. However, Google appears to be planning for more tenants ahead. The company built its new section broadly enough to fit others. Epic’s own store therefore looks like an obvious future candidate. Amazon, Samsung, and Microsoft could also expand existing shops through this route. Android’s app distribution landscape could look quite different within a year.
