OpenAI Personal Robot Vision Starts With Building Infrastructure First

OpenAI is back in the robotics game, and this time the ambitions are much bigger than before. CEO Sam Altman has laid out a vision where the OpenAI personal robot is not a luxury or a novelty but something every person on the planet can access. Getting there, however, will take time.
The company is actively hiring engineers across hardware, operations, systems, and machine learning, with the near-term focus on deploying robots that help specialists build infrastructure. The long-term picture, as Altman frames it, is far more sweeping: a world with “everyone having a personal robot doing anything they need.”
This is a remarkable turnaround from 2020, when OpenAI shut down its robotics division, concluding at the time that general artificial intelligence could be reached faster without robots and that training data for robotic systems was simply too scarce. Five years later, the calculus has changed.
According to Altman, the new robotics team grew out of OpenAI’s world simulation research program, led by Aditya Ramesh, the same program that absorbed the Sora team after the AI video app was shut down. That lineage matters, because world simulation is essentially about teaching AI to understand physical cause and effect, the kind of understanding a robot needs to operate in the real world without constant human supervision.
Since January 2025, the team has been quietly rebuilt with a focus on developing general-purpose robots that push progress toward AGI. The connection between robotics and AGI is not incidental here. OpenAI appears to believe that embodied AI, meaning AI that exists in and interacts with physical space, could be a meaningful pathway toward the kind of general intelligence the company has always been chasing.
Still, significant questions remain. What OpenAI expects to get out of this in the medium term is unclear, especially given its recent strategic shift toward AI agent apps. The real play may come down to training data and alternative AI development approaches enabled by embodied models.
The OpenAI personal robot dream is real, but it is also genuinely far off. For now, the company is planting seeds in infrastructure, hoping the harvest eventually reaches everyone.
