AI hull cleaning robots are driving a major shift in maritime operations as Neptune Robotics secures a $12 million investment to scale its intelligent cleaning systems. As a result, the Singapore-based company is expanding manufacturing and R&D capabilities to meet rising global demand for sustainable shipping solutions, thereby positioning its technology at the center of efforts to cut emissions, reduce fuel costs, and modernize fleet maintenance.
Moreover, this investment builds on a US$52 million Series B round led by Granite Asia in September 2025. Taken together, these funds position Neptune for aggressive global growth.
At the core of this expansion, however, is a pressing maritime problem. Biofouling, the buildup of marine growth on ship hulls, can raise greenhouse gas emissions by up to 25–30%. In addition, it pushes up fuel costs and worsens environmental performance across entire fleets.
To address this challenge, Neptune Robotics deploys intelligent machines. Its AI-enabled robots use proprietary computer vision and machine learning to clean hulls in harsh conditions. As a result, the robots operate in extreme weather, strong currents, and low-visibility waters, around the clock.
Consequently, the new facility will unlock significant production capacity. By the end of 2026, Neptune will increase its local autonomous cleaning capacity by 400%, with plans to reach 60 daily hulls by 2027. In other words, that is a five-fold jump in output from current levels.
CEO Elizabeth Chan is clear about what drives this decision. She explains that operators face growing pressure on fuel costs and emissions compliance. Therefore, Neptune’s autonomous hull cleaning technology, she argues, directly helps clients run more sustainable operations.
Neptune’s robotic system can clean full draft capesize vessels within 24 hours and counter 4-knot currents, day or night. Additionally, the system handles all vessel types without damaging hull coatings.
The scale of Neptune’s reach is already impressive. The company covers 61 ports across Singapore and China, representing around 70% of Asia’s major trade routes. Moreover, the world’s top five bulk carrier and container ship fleets already trust its services.
The new R&D hub will further strengthen Neptune’s technology edge. The Singapore facilities will house dedicated operations to advance the company’s computer vision and machine learning capabilities. As a result, Neptune’s autonomous hull cleaning robots will become smarter and more reliable over time.
Meanwhile, the broader shipping industry is watching closely. Biofouling remains one of shipping’s most expensive and least-addressed challenges, yet most operators still rely on manual solutions. Neptune’s factory bet signals that automated maintenance at scale is no longer a future idea, it is happening now.
