Anthropic has officially introduced Claude Sonnet 5, describing it as the company’s most agentic Sonnet model to date. According to Anthropic, Claude Sonnet 5 can make plans, use tools such as browsers and terminals, and operate autonomously at a level that previously required larger, more expensive models.
The company noted that earlier Sonnet models, including versions 3.5, 3.6, and 3.7, were the first to demonstrate strong coding and tool use skills, but more recent gains in agentic performance had shifted toward Anthropic’s Opus lineup. With this release, Sonnet 5 narrows that gap, delivering performance close to Opus 4.8 while remaining more affordable, and represents a substantial improvement over Sonnet 4.6 in reasoning, tool use, coding, and general knowledge work.
On safety, Anthropic reported that Sonnet 5 shows an overall lower rate of undesirable behaviors than Sonnet 4.6 and is generally safer for agentic use, while also having a much lower ability to perform cybersecurity tasks compared to current Opus models. The company added that its automated behavioral audit found Sonnet 5 scored lower, meaning safer, than Sonnet 4.6 overall, though it still showed somewhat higher rates of misaligned behavior compared to the more capable Opus 4.8 and Claude Mythos Preview.
Because Sonnet 5 tested slightly stronger on certain cyber-related tasks than its predecessor, Anthropic said it has launched the model with real-time cyber safeguards enabled by default, the same protections used in Claude Opus 4.7 and 4.8.
On pricing, Anthropic confirmed that Sonnet 5 launches with introductory pricing of $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens through August 31, 2026, after which it moves to standard pricing of $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens. Developers can access the model via claude-sonnet-5 on the Claude API.
Early access partners across engineering, legal tech, and insurance sectors reportedly praised Claude Sonnet 5 for completing complex, multi-step tasks end-to-end, something earlier models often struggled to finish without human intervention.
