San Francisco-based Fearn, the AI-native patent platform, has raised $5.5 million in a seed round led by Kindred Ventures, with participation from a16z speedrun, Designer Fund, and Essence VC. The funding targets one of the most overlooked inequalities in the innovation economy, the gap between well-resourced companies that file patents within 48 hours and solo inventors who wait weeks.
Every patent system in the world is now first-to-file, meaning the priority filing date is what matters not who invented first, but who filed first. That structural reality has quietly handed a decisive advantage to large corporations with deep legal budgets, leaving independent researchers and early-stage startups perpetually exposed.
Fearn’s Bet on AI-Powered Patent Filing
By cutting patent drafting from 50-plus hours to just 20 minutes and reducing costs by up to 96%, Fearn’s AI-powered patent filing platform lets any inventor draft a Big Law quality patent and file faster than even the best-resourced IP organisations today.
Co-founder and CEO Han Kim previously drafted and prosecuted patent applications across software, life sciences, and mechanical arts as a scientific analyst at Morrison Foerster, and conducted bio-inspired neural algorithms research as a PhD student at Caltech. That background shapes the platform’s design philosophy: close the experience gap, not just the cost gap.
Unlike many generative AI products built on general-purpose large language models, Fearn has developed a specialised architecture designed specifically for patent drafting workflows, combining multiple AI models engineered to address technical requirements associated with patent applications, including written-description standards and figure-labeling compliance.
