Flourish Raises $500M to Build Brain-Powered AI at 20 Watts
Betting the Brain Holds the Blueprint
Flourish Inc., a neuroscience-driven artificial intelligence startup, has raised $500 million at a $2.5 billion valuation, with Amazon founder Jeff Bezos personally anchoring the round with roughly $100 million. The financing closed on or around June 4, 2026, drawing in Alphabet’s GV, Lux Capital, and healthcare-focused fund Catalio alongside Bezos.
Funding discussions started in late April 2026, and the round closed in about five weeks an unusually fast close for a company with no commercial product, driven almost entirely by founder conviction. Bezos initially put in $50 million, then increased his stake as Flourish assembled its $500 million war chest, according to Wired.
Flourish was co-founded by Thomas Reardon, who created Internet Explorer at Microsoft in 1994 and later sold brain-computer interface startup CTRL-labs to Meta for between $500 million and $1 billion, and former Amazon S-team executive Rob Williams. The New York-based startup is building what it calls Flourish Cortex AI, an architecture modelled on connectomics the mapping of real neurons and their biological connections.
Cortex AI aims to operate in a range of 20 to 50 watts roughly the power draw of a laptop, not a server rack which would represent an order-of-magnitude improvement over conventional AI hardware. That efficiency target puts the Flourish Cortex AI system squarely against rivals like Groq, Cerebras, and Etched, though with a key philosophical difference. While those rivals pursue efficiency through custom silicon, Flourish is betting it can achieve the same result through algorithms and architecture alone meaning Cortex AI could run on existing hardware if the approach works.
The $2.5 billion valuation, which some sources suggest could stretch to $3.5 billion, built entirely on founder pedigree and investor conviction that neuroscience-driven AI represents the next paradigm shift. For now, the biggest bet in the room belongs to Bezos.
