Lambda, a fast-growing AI cloud provider, has raised $1 billion in fresh private debt. The company will use the funds to buy more Nvidia AI chips. Microsoft will lease these chips once Lambda deploys them across its infrastructure. Bloomberg reported that JPMorgan Chase arranged the short-dated debt deal this week. Consequently, the Lambda $1B debt deal marks the company’s latest move to expand chip capacity quickly.

This financing is not Lambda’s first debt-fueled chip purchase this year. In May, the company closed a separate $1 billion secured credit facility for GPU infrastructure. This week, Lambda also closed a $926 million loan to fund Nvidia’s newest GB300 GPUs. Notably, that deployment supports a contract Lambda holds directly with Nvidia. Meanwhile, banks and tech firms have raised over $400 billion in AI-related debt this year, per Bloomberg.

Furthermore, the fresh debt round arrives as Lambda pursues a much larger fundraising goal. The company is reportedly in talks for a $3 billion pre-IPO round. Last November, Lambda raised $1.5 billion in venture capital, as TechCrunch previously reported, at a $5.43 billion valuation. Therefore, investors clearly see strong momentum behind Lambda’s aggressive expansion strategy.

Overall, Lambda’s borrowing pattern reflects a wider trend across the AI industry. Companies increasingly rely on debt, rather than equity, to fund expensive chip purchases. This approach lets firms scale quickly while preserving ownership stakes for existing shareholders. However, it also raises questions about repayment risk if AI demand slows unexpectedly. For now, Lambda appears confident it can deploy chips fast enough to repay lenders.
