Rory McIlroy is making a statement at Augusta National. The Northern Irishman surged to the solo lead in the second round of the 2026 Masters on Friday, birdying three consecutive holes to reach 8-under par and open a three-shot cushion at the top of the leaderboard. The 36-year-old is chasing history, a back-to-back Masters title that would make him the first player since Tiger Woods in 2001-02 to win consecutive green jackets.
McIlroy arrived at Friday’s second round already in a commanding position. His opening day 67 gave him a share of the first-round lead alongside Sam Burns, with the pair two ahead of the chasing pack. The defending champion had admitted after Thursday that his ball-striking was not at its best, “I think a fair score for me today would have been like 2-under maybe with some of the places I hit it,” he said, yet the scorecard read 5-under regardless, a testament to his course management and putting touch around Augusta.
Friday afternoon, McIlroy wasted no time pressing his advantage. He birdied the par 5 second to reach 6-under and take sole possession of the lead, then added another at the third, nearly driving the green in the process, to move to 7-under. A delicate 15-footer at the par-3 fourth made it three in a row and pushed his margin to three shots. Augusta National, which has been playing firm and fast all week, looked almost generous under his feet.
Before McIlroy stepped onto the first tee, the morning wave had already set up an intriguing backdrop. Tyrrell Hatton put together the day’s standout early round, at one point joining McIlroy atop the leaderboard at 7-under, only to close with a three-putt bogey at 18 that dropped him to 4-under after a 6-under 66. Justin Rose, the runner-up last year who lost to McIlroy in a sudden-death playoff, threatened briefly, four birdies in five holes during the middle of his round pushed him within one of the lead before bogeys at 12 and again late trimmed his challenge.
Wyndham Clark, the 2023 US Open champion, provided some of the sharper early scoring, shooting a 4-under 68 with three straight birdies from holes 2 to 4, plus two more at 15 and 16, to reach 4-under overall. It is a significant return for Clark, whose world ranking has fallen sharply from the top 10 over the past year.
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, the player most expected to challenge McIlroy, endured a difficult afternoon. Water at both 13 and 15 proved costly, with Scheffler finding Rae’s Creek from 245 yards at 13 and then hitting over the green at 15 and into the water fronting 16, leaving him at 1-under and well off the pace. Brooks Koepka offered a more positive subplot, back-to-back birdies at 12 and 13 had him at 3-under and within range of the weekend leaders.
The big names on the wrong side of the cutline have continued to struggle. Bryson DeChambeau sits at 4 over, in real danger of missing the cut, while Ludvig Ã…berg is also hovering near the projected mark of 3 over. Jon Rahm’s week, which began with a 6-over 78 on Thursday, has not recovered meaningfully.
