While the Grid Was Collapsing, Nigeria’s Tech Workers Found a Better Plan
For years, unreliable electricity has shaped how tech workers in Nigeria live and work. Many start their day not just thinking about tasks, but about power. Before global calls or tight deadlines, there is always that quiet worry in the background: will the light stay on?
In this article, we explore Nigeria’s growing shift to solar energy, from everyday power struggles to why more people are making the switch, the human cost behind it, and how it is reshaping tech workers, businesses, and daily life.
The Nigerian Electricity Challenge
Nigeria is Africa’s largest economy and most populous country, yet reliable electricity remains one of its biggest challenges.
For many households, the power supply can be unpredictable. Some communities receive only a few hours of electricity daily, while others experience frequent outages without warning.
The consequences extend beyond inconvenience.
When electricity disappears:
- Food spoils in refrigerators.
- Businesses lose customers.
- Students lose study time.
- Remote workers lose productivity.
- Healthcare services become more difficult to deliver.
Generators have become a costly necessity rather than a sustainable solution.
Why Solar Energy in Nigeria Is Growing Rapidly?
Several factors have combined to accelerate solar power adoption in Nigeria.
- Rising Fuel Costs
Here in Nigeria, the shift to solar was not driven by environmental concerns or a desire to embrace new technology. It was driven by necessity.
The turning point came in 2023 when the government removed the petrol subsidy. Almost overnight, fuel prices surged, making it far more expensive to power homes, shops, offices, and businesses with generators.
- Higher Electricity Tariffs
In 2024, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission adjusted electricity tariffs under its supplementary Multi-Year Tariff Order.ÂÂ
The price for Band A customers rose sharply to about ₦225 per kilowatt-hour from ₦68/kWh.
Although it was later reduced to around ₦206.80/kWh in May, the change had already sparked widespread concern and pushback from consumers and organised labour, who demanded a return to the earlier rate.
- Greater Access to Solar Technology
Solar adoption is spreading rapidly across Nigeria’s cities and communities.
In Lagos (Lekki, Ikoyi, Ikeja), rooftops and hospitals such as the NSIA-LUTH Cancer Centre now operate on solar-diesel hybrid systems. Similarly, in Abuja (Mabushi, Wuse 2, Gwarinpa), solar energy powers government buildings and commercial hubs, including a 1.52MW microgrid in Mabushi.
Likewise, in Kano, the 10MW Challawa solar plant supports industrial energy needs.
Beyond these urban centres, solar is also expanding into rural areas. For example, in Nasarawa (Doma, Lafia), World Bank-backed mini-grids now provide steady electricity. In addition, in Plateau (Pankshin) and Jigawa (Kafin Hausa), solar mini-grids power homes and agro-processing activities. Meanwhile, in Ogun (Ijoko), a 500kWp system supports households and small businesses.
The Human Cost Behind the Shift to Solar
The shift to solar did not begin with a major investment. It started with what they could afford.
A remote worker dealing with blackouts may not have the budget for a complete solar installation. Instead, they begin with a power bank that keeps a phone running during outages.
The next purchase might be a rechargeable lamp for evening work or a small solar-powered charging kit.
As work demands grow, so do their energy needs.
A laptop user may invest in a mini inverter and battery setup capable of powering a laptop and Wi-Fi router for several hours. Others choose portable solar generators that can charge phones, laptops, and other small devices without relying on fuel.
What started as a small power bank has quickly grown into full solar setups with panels, batteries, inverters, lighting, and internet backup that keep life and work going during blackouts.
Economic Benefits of Solar Power Adoption in Nigeria
The expanding solar industry is creating employment opportunities across the country.
These include:
- Solar installers
- Technicians
- Engineers
- Sales professionals
- Maintenance specialists
- Energy consultants
It also brings wider benefits: less noise from generators, cleaner air, lower emissions, and a growing push for innovation and a more diverse energy system.
Nigerians adapted to power shortages through resilience and creativity. Today, many are choosing a different path.
They are turning to the sun.
And as solar technology becomes more accessible, affordable, and widespread, one thing is becoming increasingly clear:
At what point did we stop seeing solar energy as just an option in Nigeria and start accepting it as the future that’s already taking shape in our everyday lives?
