China Sets Strict EV Weight Standards

China’s electric vehicles have a weight problem. They got bigger, heavier, and more feature-loaded for more than a decade. Now the government has decided to do something about it. Chinese state broadcaster CCTV reported on Sunday that Beijing is pushing automakers to produce slimmer vehicles. The average passenger car in the country weighed 1,704 kilograms in 2024, weighing about a third more than in 2012. That is 392 kilograms added in just 12 years.
What Drove Chinese EVs to This Weight
Two forces are driving this trend. First, range competition has intensified. China’s crowded EV market pushes manufacturers to install larger battery packs to advertise longer driving ranges. However, bigger batteries make vehicles heavier.
Second, feature bloat continues to add weight. To stand out, manufacturers increasingly turn EVs into mobile living spaces. Some models allow users to work, watch videos, drink coffee, and relax inside. A few even include in-car toilets. As a result, every added feature increases vehicle weight.
Bigger Vehicles, Bigger Challenges
At the same time, family EVs have grown wider. Many popular SUVs and MPVs now measure 2 metres or more in width. Consequently, the trend creates challenges beyond energy efficiency.
Parking has become one of them. Many urban parking spaces across Chinese cities were designed for significantly smaller vehicles. As EVs grow larger, fitting them into existing infrastructure becomes more difficult.
China EV Weight Limit Regulations
Beijing has already responded. On 1 January 2026, China became the first country to enforce a mandatory energy consumption standard for electric vehicles. The regulation limits two-tonne EVs to 15.1 kWh per 100 km under the Chinese CLTC cycle. Compared with previous recommendations, the new requirement tightens efficiency targets by approximately 11%.
Manufacturers cannot produce, sell, or register new EV models that fail to meet the standard. The framework, known as GB 36980.1-2025, establishes binding efficiency thresholds for every newly produced battery-electric passenger vehicle, with requirements based on vehicle weight.
In addition, models already listed in the purchase tax exemption catalogue at the end of 2025 can remain in the 2026 catalogue if they meet the updated standard. Otherwise, regulators may remove them. Automakers must also redesign new vehicles produced from 2026 onward. Vehicles that exceed the limit will require drivetrain, software, or structural improvements.
What Compliance Looks Like
Manufacturers will likely focus on lighter materials, improved aerodynamics, and more efficient drivetrains. Instead of continually increasing battery size, they will rely on smarter technologies to extend driving range without adding weight.
Furthermore, the standard targets a 7% average increase in range among compliant EVs. Current market data suggests that many leading models already meet the requirement.
For example, the Tesla Model Y, which weighs slightly more than 1.8 tonnes, consumes between 11.2 and 13.4 kWh per 100 km under the CLTC standard. Therefore, it remains comfortably within the new limit.
Impact on the Industry
The policy will likely influence both domestic and export markets. Analysts expect the regulation to encourage automakers to prioritise efficiency rather than simply increasing battery size.
Meanwhile, Chinese authorities view the measure as part of a broader energy strategy. They argue that more efficient electric vehicles can help slow growth in national electricity demand as EV adoption continues to rise.
China produced 16 million EVs in 2025. Making them lighter is no longer a design preference. It is now a requirement for selling them.
